addiction treatmentDeciding to go to treatment for substance abuse can definitely be life-changing for an addict. But sometimes the whole idea of what “rehab” is all about can be distorted by movie plots and celebrity rehab stories.

So, do you know what an effective substance abuse rehabilitation program like Adult & Teen Challenge in Florida is really like? There are many fallacies about substance abuse rehabs in Bartow, FL and other Florida locations.

Addiction Treatment Myth #1 – Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs are “One Size Fits All”

While all substance abuse rehabs in Florida have a common set of treatments, each center is unique. Outcomes can be highly influenced mostly by the length of stay in the program. Short-term rehabs in  Florida rarely work. The better rehabs will last several months, not a few days, since it takes that long to reteach them truth, positive thinking and motivations toward a successful future.

Each drug or alcohol abuser has a different life experience with drugs and alcohol. What started the initial use and subsequent addiction can be quite different for each individual. So, unraveling it will often take different approaches and some initial counseling.

Addictions are often triggered by a hurt or a void in the person’s life, so those must be dealt with at the same time or the addiction cannot be eliminated. Often called “dual-diagnosis” treatment, this work on the heart and soul is critical, but not a part of the treatment in all rehabs.

The Second Myth of Addiction Treatment – Addicts in Florida Have the Choice to Stop their Addiction Without Help

addiction treatmentAn addiction is affected by a portion of the brain referred to as the Mesolimbic Dopamine System. This system is not part of the conscious portion of the brain. So, it is impossible for an addict to discern how to stop their chemical dependency. Whether or not the addict stoked the fire of the addiction to begin with is irrelevant to their option to turn it around. Once the addiction is started, the addict no longer has control to stop the addiction.

The Third Myth of Addiction Treatment – An Drug Abuser in Florida Will Reject Going to a Rehab Until they Have Hit “Rock Bottom”

It is true that a vast majority of addicts will hit “rock bottom” due to their chemical dependency, before they will enter a drug and alcohol treatment center, in a lucid moment of self-preservation. But all addicts are motivated differently, and have different levels of their chemical dependency. For that reason, some may be convinced to stop their addiction by loved ones, while others may need to nearly die before they’ll get help. Common reasons people seek help include, but are not limited to: family pressure, legal issues, illness or near death experiences, or finances. Sadly, many choose to wait until there’s no other option, but this does not describe all addicts or alcoholics, so don’t wait!

addiction treatmentIf you, or someone you love in Florida is involved in a harmful chemical dependency to drugs or alcohol, it is advisable to seek addiction treatment help as soon as possible. The longer the addiction goes on, the more difficult it will be to curtail it. In contacting a rehab center, you can get immediate answers to any questions you may have. It is always the right decision to at least start to research the options for addiction treatment.
