Making the decision to go to treatment for substance abuse can definitely be a positive move for an addict. But sometimes the concept of what “rehab” is all about can be confusing, since many programs are like a revolving door.
So, do you know what an effective chemical dependency rehabilitation program like Adult & Teen Challenge in Florida is really like? Perhaps we should talk about the fallacies about substance abuse rehabs in Atlantic Beach, FL and other Florida locations.
Although all rehab programs in Florida have a common set of treatments, each rehab is unique. Outcomes can be highly influenced mostly by the length of stay in the program. Short-term rehabs in Florida rarely work. The better rehabs will last several months, not a few days, since it requires that long to get the drugs or alcohol totally out truth, positive thinking and motivations toward a successful future.
Each addict has a different life experience with drugs and alcohol. What triggered the initial use and subsequent addiction can be quite different for different people. So, unraveling it will often take different approaches and some initial counseling.
Addictions are often initially caused by a hurt or a void in the person’s life, so those must be dealt with simultaneously or the addiction cannot be eliminated. Often called “dual-diagnosis” treatment, this combined therapy is critical, but not provided in all rehabs.
Addictions are affected by a portion of the brain referred to as the Mesolimbic Dopamine System. It is not something that a person can consciously manage. So, it is quite difficult for an addict to connect the logic of unhealthy and negative behavior to their chemical dependency. Whether or not the addict opened the door to the addiction to begin with is irrelevant to their ability to turn it around. Once Pandora’s Box is opened, it takes more than the addict alone to stop it.
It is true that a vast majority of addicts must hit “rock bottom” due to their chemical dependency, before they will enter a drug and alcohol treatment center, in a lucid moment of self-preservation. But all addicts are motivated differently, and have different levels of their chemical dependency. For that reason, some may be motivated to get help by loved ones, while others may need to nearly die before they’ll get help. Common reasons people seek help include, but are not limited to: family pressure, legal issues, illness or near death experiences, or finances. Sadly, many choose to wait until they’ve destroyed all other option, but this does not describe all addicts or alcoholics, so don’t wait!
If you, or someone you love in Florida is consumed by a harmful chemical dependency to drugs or alcohol, it is best to seek professional help as soon as possible. The more time goes on, the more difficult it will be to curtail it. In contacting a substance abuse rehab, you can get immediate answers to any questions you may have. It is never a poor decision to begin to research the options for addiction treatment.

Atlantic Beach, a city in Duval County, Florida, is the northernmost of the Jacksonville Beaches communities. When the majority of communities in Duval County consolidated with Jacksonville, Florida in 1968, Atlantic Beach, along with Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Baldwin, Florida, remained quasi-independent. Like the other towns, it maintains its own municipal government but its residents vote in the Jacksonville mayoral election and have representation on the Jacksonville city council. The population was 13,368 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 13,436. Development of Atlantic Beach took off around 1900 after Henry Flagler built the Mayport stop of his East Coast Railway to the north of the town. The Atlantic Beach Corporation bought and developed most of the land in what is now Atlantic Beach in 1915, and the town was incorporated in 1926. The town was expanded in the 1987 when it annexed Seminole Beach, which had previously been within the city limits of Jacksonville. The current mayor is Mike Borno.
